Owning a Car in NC

April 15th, 2008

Owning a car in North Carolina can be a pain if you are not prepared or do not know what you are doing.  For example, if you are planning on moving down to North Carolina because of a career change, etc., if you already have a job, you have 30 days from the time you secure employment to register your vehicle before being penalized.  However, before you can do this, you must first obtain a North Carolina driver’s license.  So, if you have already secured employment prior to your moving down to North Carolina, it is advisable to get your driver’s license taken care of immediately so that you can move on to getting your vehicle registered.  Before you go to the Department of Motor Vehicles,  you will need to bring several things with you before they will allow you to take the written exam needed to get your license: 1) proof of age and identity (2 picture Id’s such as a driver’s license and a passport), 2) proof of liability insurance (a copy of your insurance policy) 3) proof of residency (lease agreement) 4) proof of social security (social security card).
