Is career management planning easy to do?

I would like to make sure that I do everything possible in order to insure that my career goes well and that I get promoted into the positions that I aspire to. I think that it might help me if I got some help with career management planning so that I would know what steps I need to take in order to further my career. Can anyone tell me where I can learn more about this type of planning and what is involved? Or where I can hire someone to help me with this, since otherwise I am sure I would miss some things that would help.
