A Teenager’s Misconceptions About Alcoholism

September 24th, 2008

“Do you ever worry about alcoholism?” Pete asked his friend Sammy.  “Even though we are still teenagers, you have to admit that we drink quite a bit.  Do you think that we could become alcoholics?”  Sammy thought for a while and then said that he thinks that they are too young to worry about such things and that alcoholism probably takes many years to develop before it becomes a problem.  Sammy’s thoughts on drinking probably reflect what a lot of teenagers think about alcohol.  What they do not probably understand is that in some instances, it does not take years and years for alcoholism to develop.  In fact, the research statistics point to the fact that hundreds of thousands of teens and pre-teens are alcohol dependent in this country.
