Depending upon your choice of systems you may or may not have to replace costly air filters. If you want to avoid this maintenance cost you should consider a filterless air purifier. As the name implies there is not filter to clean or change but there is a maintenance trade off in the process. Most filterless systems electronically remove the particulate matter from the air. The fact that something is being removed would suggest that it goes somewhere and that somewhere has to be cleaned on a regular basis. While there are not filters, the plates do need to be removed and washed.
