Diabetes : The Emory Transplant Center

September 3rd, 2008

A new treatment for Type 1 diabetes is being used at The Emory Transplant Center. This new treatment is called Islet Transplantation and focuses on "islets"; which are clusters of cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. These can help in treatment for those with Diabetes by helping a patient whose body has lost the ability to produce insulin. This treatment can provide sustained insulin independence in individuals with type 1 diabetes and might be a great option, although the process is complex and still in the research stages.
