Garlic (Allium sativum) is an incredibly versatile herb used to treat a variety of ailments. Herbalists use fresh garlic and garlic nutritional supplements to treat everything from ear infections to help prevent heart disease and believe it to be an excellent digestive aid. In the olden days it was used in an attempt to treat tuberculosis. In the 1950′s, garlic was tried to treat cholera, typhus, and amebic dysentery. Before the widespread availability of antibiotics, garlic was used on the battlefield to disinfect wounds and to prevent gangrene. The Soviet Army depended so heavily on garlic’s antiseptic properties that it is sometimes called "Russian penicillin." Garlic has also been used as an anticoagulant and may help lower cholesterol. It is also believed to lower blood pressure and it’s health supporting properties are currently the subject of much research.
