Props In Yoga
January 23rd, 2008
You may have noticed in many yoga classes that the teachers use props when practising some asanas. But why?
Props were first used in yoga by Iyengar, who developed Iyengar yoga. However, they are used in many other types now. They are great for helping people get the correct alignment in yoga poses that are otherwise too difficult to do.
Props are particularly helpful for beginners and those with injuries. Getting the correct alignment is important in feeling the full benefits of a pose. If you don’t have the flexibility to do that, props will allow you to start building that. They make the process faster than it would be otherwise.
Props can also help experienced yoga students expand their practice into more difficult poses. In many ways, we are always beginners with yoga. There are many advanced poses that require a lot of strength and flexibility that even those who have done yoga for years may not have, Additionally, props can help people hold poses for longer.
