What is heart disease, and how is it diagnosed?

I know that many different conditions can be categorized as heart disease. My dad had a heart attack. He has heart disease. My mother did not have a heart attack, but she, too, has heart disease. I also know that there is a chance that I will have heart disease, simply because there is a family history of it. What is heart disease, and how is it diagnosed. My dad didn’t know he had heart disease until after he had his heart attack. My mom had a heart catherization to diagnose her condition. What other tests can indicate that heart disease is present?
