Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge in Idaho is a terrific place to relax, picnic, and spend time viewing birds and other wildlife. Kootenai Refuge is located in Idaho’s Panhandle, just 20 miles south of Canada. It is home to many resident animals and birds, and many migratory birds pass through here seasonally. The diverse habitats at the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge attract and support many types of birds. Hawks, bald eagles, ruffed grouse, woodpeckers and osprey are some of the birds spotted here. Mallard ducks, Canada geese and tundra swan are a few of the many migratory birds that may be viewed seasonally.Wildlife such as deer, moose, coyotes and black bear have been observed at Kootenai Refuge. Smaller mammals including muskrats and beavers may be seen in wetland areas. Mice, woodrats and raccoons are some other types of wildlife you could see on your visit to Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge. Walking along foot trails, viewing and photographing wildlife are the most popular activities at the Kootenai Refuge. Regulated, seasonal fishing and hunting are also permitted.
