Training My Puppy Not to Chew
January 23rd, 2009
Puppies love to chew! Some dogs seem like they never grow out of it and chew on everything left in sight. Here is a simple tip on puppy training to stop your dog from chewing. First of all, your puppy is growing new teeth and needs to chew. You cannot stop your puppy from chewing all together…it’s a biological need. Instead, make sure your puppy has plenty of toys, bones, and ropes that he is allowed to chew on. Encourage your puppy to like these toys by playing with him and telling him “Good dog! You got your toy!” every time he picks one up. If he grabs something that doesn’t belong to him gently take it away, and in a low voice say “That’s not yours.” Your puppy naturally wants your approval, so it won’t take long before he associates the positive behavior with his toys and leaves your things alone.
