Jupiter had taken them by surprise, as had the column of soldiers that marched out the north gate. Their indecision had cost them the lives of more than a few priests, but now they were streaming across the protective zone, trying to intercept Jupiter and his unit. “Move!” Vectis said audibly, as if his voice could help Jupiter and his men, who had spun their horses around and were lashing them toward the fort. Vectis himself had shifted his troops into double-quick time, the quickest pace soldiers could move while still maintaining battle readiness. Lay Software glanced over at Jupiter’s riders, who were trying to maintain speed through the pitted surface where the rows of defensive hooks had been ripped out.
