Tens of thousands of domain names

How many domains get registered in a day do you think? I found that over 54,000 got registered yesterday, and most seem to be just gibberish! Must be domains for less than ethical activity, perhaps, as I would have thought most domains would be related to the content they are going to serve. When I bought a whole slew of domains a few weeks ago, I saved a bunch using a GoDaddy coupon which gave me a thirty percent discount on all my dot com domain names with them. I wonder what kind of money some of these top flight domain buyers spend when they purchase a bunch of domains.
