What’s the difference between a hip hop artist and a rap artist?

What’s the difference between a hip hop artist and a rap artist? My children have corrected me several times, when I have referred to a particular singer as a rapper. It all sounds the same to me.

I don’t really care for any of it. I listen to classic rock. When I know that I will be taking the kids to practice or to meet their friends at the mall, I cringe. I know they will want to put one of their compact discs in the cd player. They don’t listen to anything but rap. I stand corrected. They listen to rap and hip hop.
