Why Is The Day Following Thanksgiving, called Black Friday?

In the not too distant past, I was looking through the newspaper searching for some Womens Suede Jackets for the various women in my family, when I came across an article about ‘Black Friday’. I always thought that Black Friday was an employer workplace related term referring to the lost day of productivity due the majority of employees taking the day after Thanksgiving off. It’s actually a business owner\retailer’s term. It refers to retailer’s achieving profitability – ‘getting out of the red and into the black’. The is because of consumers doing the majority of their yearly and Christmas shopping on the day after Christmas.
