If you want to learn to speak Spanish you need a native language speaker

January 24th, 2008

Most experts agree that if you want to learn to speak Spanish properly, you will need to rely on the services of a native language speaker. If you trying to learn the language in an academic setting from someone who is not Spanish, you may inadvertently pick up their accent and non-authentic ways of speaking. But since you will just be learning the language, he will have no way of knowing that you are picking up speech patterns that are not appropriate in that language. We have all met, for example, people who speak English with a British accent — and that’s because they have picked it up from teachers from the UK instead of from the United States. Don’t let that happen to you — learn to speak the language from a native.
